Dominquez-Escalante Historic Trail Exploration of 1776

Using the translated diaries of Catholic priest Silvestre Velez de Escalante during their 159-day "Dominguez-Escalante" expedition in 1776, the State Historic Preservation Office is building an online interactive map showing the route through Utah, connecting to efforts in New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona. The map will show locations and diary excerpts and allow users to explore the route. With the route mapped, the SHPO will work with our land managing partners to identify recreational trails, roads, and interpretive waysides that get Utahns and visitors on-the-ground to hike, bike, drive, and explore this unique part of the state and nation's history.
