ATLANTA, GEORGIA – Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has signed an executive order creating the “Georgia US250 Committee,” the official organizing entity tasked with planning and coordinating the state’s activities commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Georgia became the 40th state or territory to join the historic, nationwide effort to commemorate the United States Semiquincentennial by establishing a local entity to commemorate this milestone. In collaboration with America250, a nonpartisan initiative working to engage every American in commemorating the 250th anniversary, the commission will play a key role in promoting and coordinating civic engagement leading up to 2026.
“I extend my warmest congratulations to the State of Georgia for establishing the Georgia US250 Committee and actively joining America250 as well as states and territories across the country in commemorating our nation’s 250th anniversary,” Rosie Rios, U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission Chair, said. “As one of the 13 original colonies, Georgia has played a notable role not only in our country’s establishment but in the 250 years of history that has followed. This milestone is an excellent opportunity to reflect on our journey as a nation, and through the formation of this committee, The Peach State will be able to share its rich history, collective accomplishments, and hopes for future American generations.”
“As America prepares for its 250th anniversary, Georgia is proud to play a part in recognizing the long history of our great nation and celebrating what makes it exceptional,” said Governor Brian Kemp. “We look forward to seeing the end results of this work to properly mark this incredible milestone.”
America250 is encouraging every U.S. state, territory, and the District of Columbia to form their respective America250 entities to ensure an inclusive, reflective, and impactful commemoration of this unforgettable milestone. With Georgia’s commission now on board, only 16 states and territories have yet to establish an entity. The State’s US250 Committee will be led by the Governor’s designee, the President of the Georgia Historical Society, the Chair of the Board of Directors of Georgia Humanities, and the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development.
The 40 established state and territorial commissions include Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and the District of Columbia.
