There is no one way to be American. When I am asked Where are you from? my response usually is Illinois. The next question I usually get is, No, where are you really from?
I sometimes think about what being American really means. When people ask me where I’m “really” from, it makes me feel sad. Does my brown skin make me any less American than anyone else? America is my home. I’m proud to be American. We all belong here and that’s what being American means to me.
