Step back in time, to 1776, as the HEARTS Collaborative brings the late 18th and early 19th centuries to life through dedicated period re-enactors, hands-on experiences, and enthusiastic volunteers. Historic Cedar Grove is the 5,000 square-foot circa 1831 Greek Revival home of the “Cotton King of Mecklenburg” James G. Torrance and both his second and third wives, Margaret Allison of Iredell County and Nancy Davidson of Mecklenburg County. James was the only biological son of Scots-Irish immigrant, Hugh Torance, who purchased the land on which the two homesites sit from John McDowell in 1779. The historic Hugh Torance House & Store is the circa 1779 home of Hugh Torance and his his wife, Isabelle Kerr Falls, the widow of his Revolutionary War Captain Galbraith Falls who was slain in the Battle of Ramseur’s Mill. The historic Hugh Torance House & Store is the oldest standing store in North Carolina and is one of the last remaining 18th century structures in Mecklenburg County.
