Old St. Peter's Church played a key role in America's history. During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington worshipped here many times when staying at the nearby Van Cortlandt Upper Manor House. The building was also used as a field hospital by French General Rochambeau's troops before and after the decisive battle at Yorktown, Virginia. Eight French Revolutionary War soldiers are buried near the church building. Notable area Revolutionary War heroes are buried in the cemetery surrounding the church including Brigadier General Seth Pomeroy (one of the heroes of Bunker Hill) and John Paulding (one of the captors of Major John Andre, the British spy involved with Benedict Arnold).Since its consecration in 1767 the Church has remained in active use; annually two services are held here on the Sunday before Memorial Day (5/24/26) and the Sunday closest to Independence Day (7/5/26).Free event.
