Motherhood in the White House has always been lived under extraordinary circumstances. This Legacy Lecture explores how America’s First Ladies navigated parenting while serving the nation - balancing public expectations, private family life, and historical moments that shaped the country.

From Dolley Madison to Edith Roosevelt and more, this Mother’s Day-themed program highlights the unique experiences of First Ladies as mothers and the enduring impact of their stories.

Featured Speakers:

  • Libby Carty McNamee is a speaker, lawyer, and award-winning author of the “Remember the Ladies” middle grade novel series, including Susanna’s Midnight Ride, Dolley Madison and the War of 1812, and The Union Spymistress. She is also the co-director of Epic Patriot Camp and is currently working on Founding Wife: The Story of Abigail Adams. A graduate of Georgetown University and Catholic University School of Law, Libby served as a Major in the U.S. Army JAG Corps and now lives in Richmond, Virginia.
  • Jayda B. Justus is the creator of The History Mom, a blog dedicated to U.S. and European history with a special emphasis on First Ladies. A former legislative director for a Member of Congress, she now lives in Richmond, Virginia, where she is working on her debut novel centered on a First Lady.
