My name is Maria, and my love for animals isn’t just something I believe in—it’s something I live every single day.

Right now, my home is filled with the personalities and presence of my cats—each one unique, each one deeply loved. But one of the most meaningful parts of my journey has been walking through both loss and new life at the same time.

Recently, I had to say goodbye to my cat Smokey. He wasn’t just a pet—he was comfort, companionship, and a constant presence through some of the hardest seasons of my life. Losing him left a space in my heart that felt impossible to fill.

And yet, just as that grief settled in, a new life entered our home—Tiger.

Tiger didn’t replace Smokey. He couldn’t. But he reminded me of something I needed to remember: that love doesn’t end when we lose—it changes, it stretches, and somehow, it makes room for more. Where there was heartbreak, there was also healing.

That experience deepened my understanding of why this work matters so much.

Animals give us unconditional love. They trust us, depend on us, and bring so much light into our lives—and yet so many of them don’t receive the care, protection, or compassion they deserve.

That’s why I volunteer with Humane World for Animals through phone banking.

Each call I make is a small act, but it’s rooted in something deeply personal. It’s about speaking up for animals like Smokey, like Tiger, and like the countless others who don’t have someone to advocate for them.

Volunteering has helped me turn grief into purpose. It’s given me a way to channel the love I carry for my own animals into something bigger—something that reaches beyond my home and into the world.

It’s not always easy. Sometimes the conversations are hard. But I keep showing up because I believe that even small actions can create real change.

For me, this isn’t just about advocacy—it’s about love in action. It’s about honoring the animals who have shaped my life by fighting for a better one for others.

And that’s why I continue to show up.
