Orangetown is proudly known as "Rich in History," and the hamlet of Tappan holds a significant place in the story of the American Revolution. The Old ’76 House served as the place where Major John André was imprisoned after receiving the plans to West Point from General Benedict Arnold. While Arnold escaped to England, André was captured by John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart, and David Williams. He was tried at the Tappan Reformed Church, found guilty of espionage, and executed by hanging at what is now known as André Hill. His remains were later returned to England in 1821 and interred at Westminster Abbey. In 1879, a monument was unveiled in Tappan to mark the site of his execution.
Join us as we celebrate our nation’s history and Orangetown’s proud role in it.
