As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month this year, I am filled with immense pride reflecting on the National Archives theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.” This month gives us the opportunity to honor the generations of Hispanic and Latino leaders who have shaped the American story while also inspiring the next generation to continue making strides toward a brighter future.
Like many, my story began outside the United States. My parents immigrated from Mexico in 1958, searching for a better life for their family. My father worked tirelessly in the Hunt’s Tomato factory in Hayward, California, and my mother raised nine children on her own, ensuring that each of us had the opportunity to receive a college education. My family’s story is one of resilience, determination, and hope—a story that mirrors the journeys of millions of Hispanic families who have made invaluable contributions to this country.
This year’s theme, “Pioneers of Change,” reflects the trailblazing spirit of so many Hispanic and Latino leaders who have opened doors for future generations. Figures like Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez, whose tireless advocacy for farmworkers’ rights has inspired movements for social justice; Celia Cruz, whose voice carried the vibrant rhythms of salsa across the globe, reminding us of the power of cultural expression; and Gloria Estefan, an America250 Ambassador, whose music has made an indelible mark on American culture and inspired millions.
These pioneers are not only icons of the past—they are shaping our future. We continue to be inspired by leaders like Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the first Hispanic woman elected to Congress, whose groundbreaking leadership has paved the way for countless others in public service. Astronaut Ellen Ocha reminds us that the sky is not the limit, as she broke barriers and became the first Hispanic woman to travel into space. And we cannot forget Roberto Clemente, whose legacy as a baseball player and humanitarian continues to inspire us to give back.
At America250, we are proud to carry forward the mission of “Shaping the Future Together.” As we prepare for our nation’s 250th anniversary since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, our commitment to honoring the stories of all Americans—including the 61 million Hispanics who call this country home—remains at the forefront of everything we do. Through initiatives like America’s Field Trip, America Gives, and Our American Story, we aim to bring people together to commemorate and celebrate not just our shared history but our shared future.
This month reminds us that while the Hispanic and Latino community has contributed enormously to our nation’s story, the work of shaping the future is ongoing. As we look ahead to 2026, I invite my fellow Americans to recommit ourselves to building a future that reflects the values of community, opportunity, and unity. Together, we can make sure that the next 250 years of our country are as full of promise as the last.
